The 17th Century Experience: The Philipsburg Manor

Just a short schlep via Metro North to “The Philipsburg Manor” in Sleepy Hollow will transport you back to the 17th century. This property was the focal point of the farming, milling and trading center that was owned by the Philipses, an Anglo-Dutch family, back in 1750. Visitors to this 300-year-old manor house can tour a working gristmill; hands on experience that explores foods, textile production techniques and medicinal practices from the old days. There is also a Dutch barn where you can help thresh wheat or just enjoy the pastoral setting and explore what life was like in the colonial times.

Make it a day trip with a partner, family or anyone interested for a breadth of fresh air and a bit of history. Not only can you see and hear what life was like then, but you can also participate.
